In a dream sequence, Al hears a mysterious voice saying that it is too soon to die, which changes from a young boy's voice to a more monstrous voice. Elsewhere, Ed's group has arrived in Kanama and is directed to Hohenheim. Ed quickly smacks him with Automail, much to Hohenheim's surprise, and also notices that Ed brought friends (Greed/Ling, Heinkel, and Darius), though Heinkel claims it's because they're on the same mission, and Greed points out that he is the leader. their groups. After Hohenheim notices Greed's Ouroboros tattoo and Ed points out that tomorrow is the promised day, Hohenheim agrees to tell them the whole story. That night, Ed is shocked, which Hohenheim admits that he couldn't have learned the truth like Alphonse, and also admits that he saw Al in Reola, who accepted his story.

Hohenheim states that since it is the Philosopher's Stone they wanted, he asks how they will use it. Hohenheim is happy to hear that Ed won't use him due to the involvement of Human Sacrifice and reveals that there will be an eclipse on the Promised Day that is part of his father's plan and he needs Ed's help to stop it. Ed refuses, preferring to go his own way without him. As his group leaves, Ed tells a message from Pinako, which are Trisha's last words that she couldn't keep her promise and "I die first." Ed watches as Hohenheim begins to shed tears before going to eat with his group. At the food stand, Heinkel, Darius, and Greed encourage Ed to at least have a decent conversation with his father, but Ed refuses, citing what he went through for him and that Hohenheim is not what he expected. Sitting alone by the fire, Hohenheim reflects on his last meeting with Trisha and admits that even though he didn't keep their promise, he will return to her later. After picking up the red cloth at the store, Ed transforms into a new red jacket, expecting this to be his last battle.

As they leave Kanama, Ed asks the serum to stay with him. Greed reminds Ed that she works for him, and Darius and Heinkel admit that even if they don't become fully human again, there is still an advantage to being a Chimera because they have nowhere else to go. Al suddenly appears, and while Ed wants to talk to him, Ling tells her not to go near him because she can smell the Pride. Parts of Pride's body emerge from Al's armor and attack with his shadow points, but the group dodges them. Pride is surprised that Greed has defected from their side and believes his soul is too weak, allowing Ling to take over. At the crash site, Lt. Gen. Grumman and Major Miles talk and note that the Führer's body is still missing from the wreckage of the train, and Grumman decides to rally the Northern forces and search to confirm that Bradley is dead so he can feel better. . Grumman also knows that he can't go back to Central right away because the Bradley administration is still in place and will have to wait for Colonel Mustang or General Armstrong to make their move first so that Grumman can time it right and make him look like a hero and also make it easier for him to become the next Führer.

As Ed follows the shadows through the eyes that have emerged from Al's armor, Greed identifies him as Homunculus Pride, who is technically his eldest brother. Pride sees Greed as an obstacle that needs to be removed, and Ed thinks he's impersonating Al, only for Pride to reveal that he actually possesses Al's sacred body. Pride decides to target Greed first, and Ed decides to fight while Heinkel and Darius hide, knowing they shouldn't fight him. Although Ed is confident that the Homunculus cannot kill him, Pride decides to cut off several of Ed's limbs instead. Ed dodges the Pride's attacks and tries to block them by transmuting the rock wall, but fails. After Greed blocks Pride's attack with his Ulitmate shield, Pride responds by grabbing him with his shadows, threatening Greed's life and the lives of Kaname. Ed responds by using transmutation to create a blackout in Kaname to cut off the light and weaken Pride's shadow powers. However, it also weakens Ed's field of vision. Greed talks it over with Heinkel and Darius and explains the situation, announcing his suspicion that Pride's real body, which is also his container, is somewhere nearby due to the original shadows coming from the bushes instead of Al's body.

However, in his chimerical form, Heinkel tracks down and invades Selim Bradley's human Pride body due to his keen animal senses. Darius explains to Ed that even though Al's body isn't moving, they can't go near him to avoid being trapped until the Pride is dealt with. As Darius directs Ed by the sounds to where Heinkel is fighting, Greed wonders how Pride tracked them down. Darius then senses Gluttony and helps them avoid his attack, revealing to Greed that they were tracked down as Gluttony has a strong sense of smell. Greed declares that thanks to Gluttony, who uses only his sense of smell to see, Darius should be level with him. Darius reluctantly agrees and transforms into his chimeric form. Darius beats up the Gluttons around him and accidentally Ed too.

As Greed assesses how difficult the situation is, inside his body, Ling suggests that he switch with him due to his ability to sense the Homunculus. When Gluttony strikes Greed's right arm, Greed reluctantly gives in to Ling's request during regeneration. Ling is able to sense Gluttony and take it down by letting Gluttony get close. Angered, Gluttony responds by transforming his body back into his true form. Before the transformed Glutton can attack, a mysterious figure bursts out from behind the bushes and slices the Glutton with a sharp bladed metal arm. When the Gluttony detects the intruder's scent, the intruder continues to attack until the Gluttony can't move. Ling happily identifies this person as Lan Fan, who returned with the left hand Automail.
