Summary:

"A Portrait of a Family," opens with Scar, Mayo, and Marcoh traveling through the desert. May worries about Scar's wound, but insists that he's fine and needs to keep moving.Meanwhile, back in Central City, Ed and Al visit their friend Winry. She works on their automail limbs and shows them some new designs she's been working on. Winry is also worried about the Elric brothers and their dangerous mission, but they assure her that they will be careful.The scene then shifts to Colonel Mustang meeting with top military officials to discuss the ongoing Homunculi investigation. They discuss the mysterious disappearances of several military officers, including General Raven, and conclude that the Homunculi must be involved. However, they are still not sure how to track them down.Back in the desert, Scar, May and Marcoh come across an abandoned city. Scar realizes that it was once home to his people, the Ishvalans, and reflects on his past and the atrocities committed against his people by the military. While exploring the city, they come across a hidden room with a mural depicting the story of the Ishvalan creation myth. Marcoh translates the story to them, revealing that the Ishvalans believe they were created by the god Ishvala to be protectors of the land.They are suddenly ambushed by a group of soldiers led by Kimble who is following them. Kimblee taunts Scar and reveals that he captured Scar's brother. Scar becomes enraged and attacks Kimblee, but is outnumbered and overcome. While things seem dire, May uses her alchemy to summon a group of panda-like creatures to distract the soldiers and allow Scar and Marco to escape using a secret underground passage.As they flee, Marcoh reveals that he has a plan to stop the Homunculi, but needs Scar's help. Scar agrees to help, and the chapter ends with the trio continuing their journey through the desert, determined to take down the Homunculi and avenge their loved ones.
